The advantage of speaking slowly

For many language learners speed is an important issue.

They complain that people in that country speak “so much faster than in my language”.
They feel incompetent because they cannot speak as fast as “native speaker”.

There are several advantages to speaking slowly.

1.       Even if you speak correctly, people may perceive you as being nervous, not as being a highly competent speaker.
2.       In most cultures, people that are high up in the social hierarchy speak slowly. Speaking slowly is a sign of high status. Low-status people typically speak like a waterfall.
3.       Speaking slowly allows you to master the language. The same is valid also for playing a musical instrument, or doing certain sports, or typing with ten fingers. Almost all serious teachers recommend practicing slowly, if you want to get rid of mistakes.

Attention: Speaking slowly does not mean that you should make many pauses. Of course, your speech should flow uninterruptedly.
